It is with great pleasure that we award Wally Cox from Northern California, United States, the 2026 Richard Taylor Memorial Advocates Award. He was graciously nominated by co-Chair, Janine Whited.
Although we made this announcement personally to Wally earlier this month, we are pleased to announce it officially now, on World Alzheimer's Day.
Wally Cox has been actively involved in dementia advocacy and community building for many years and is a vocal advocate and positive example for others living with dementia.
Just as the late Richard Taylor was an inspiration and influential voice for those affected by dementia, so too, is Wally Cox. He is an encouraging and uplifting friend and advocate who actively participates in multiple organizations, including Dementia Alliance International (DAI).
Wally was 62 years old when he was first diagnosed with dementia more than twelve years ago. His diagnosis has been modified over the years, including Alzheimer’s disease and frontotemporal dementia.
Wally has been a DAI peer-to-peer support group co-host for many years helping to reduce stigma and promote living well with dementia. He also previously served on the board of directors of DAI.
Wally uses his experiences to foster connection and support among others affected by dementia while emphasizing the importance of community and art in navigating the challenges of dementia. Despite these challenges, he has embraced art as a form of therapy and expression.
Wally has found that creating art, including painting and pottery, helps him process his emotions and find joy amidst his diagnosis. He also uses art to connect with others and build a community, sharing his experiences through advocacy and speaking engagements.
