Hom Shrestha, a board member of Dementia Alliance International (DAI) from Canada, recently published a research paper in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: Diagnosis, Assessment, & Disease Monitoring. His paper is titled "Traditional Healing and Medicine in Dementia Care for Indigenous Populations in North America, Australia, and New Zealand: Exploring Culturally-Safe Dementia Care Policy from a Global Perspective".

This paper explores ways to create dementia care policies that are culturally safe for Indigenous communities around the world.

Hom's research is a community-based review of existing studies on combining traditional healing with dementia care and prevention. This work was guided by Indigenous Elders from northern Ontario, Canada, who helped develop and validate two culturally-safe dementia care models, called Model 1 and Model 2. These models provide guidance for community advisory groups of traditional healers and healthcare providers on how to integrate traditional healing into dementia care.

The study concludes that incorporating traditional healing practices into dementia care offers a viable path to culturally-safe care for people living with dementia worldwide.
