In February 2025, DAI wrote a submission to the Office of the Chief Psychiatrist in relation to the 2005 Review of the SA Mental Health Act 2009. That submission can be viewed here.
While people living with dementia can develop mental illness like anyone in the community, dementia itself is not a mental illness. Care must be taken to use the appropriate legislation and the messaging it implies, when people living with dementia are in crisis and in desperate need of specialist care and support.
Aligning dementia with other neurodivergent conditions is a better, more logical and compassionate fit. It is equally important that families, community providers and first responders are trained in de-escalation techniques that honour the dignity and human rights of a human being expressing valid emotions, while respecting the right to safety of themselves and others.
DAI welcomes feedback, thoughts and experiences of our members, which we will bring to the submission space both here in Australia and internationally.
Once again, you can find the submission here.
