Today, on Human Rights Day, Dementia Alliance International (DAI) joins the global community in celebrating the fundamental rights and freedoms that belong to everyone, everywhere. As an organization of, by, and for people living with dementia, we stand united in advancing the human rights of those affected by this condition.
Human Rights Day, observed annually on December 10th, marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in 1948. This year’s theme, “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” underscores the urgency of taking collective action to uphold human rights and ensure a just and equitable future for all. You can learn more about the significance of this day here and access relevant resources here.
For people living with dementia, the call to action could not be more pressing. Far too often, they face systemic barriers and societal attitudes that deny them their dignity, autonomy, and full participation in society. At DAI, we are committed to challenging these injustices and championing the rights of people with dementia across the globe.
One of the ways we amplify these voices is by participating in platforms that highlight lived experiences and advocate for change. We are thrilled to introduce a powerful episode from the Wisdom at Work Podcast, featuring Theresa Flavin, DAI’s very own Human Rights Officer. In this moving interview, Theresa shares her journey of being diagnosed with dementia at the age of 65 and the profound challenges she has faced since.
In her episode, titled “Turning 65 and Diagnosed with Dementia: You Are Ostracized, Dehumanized, Institutionalized, Homogenized, Collateralized,” Theresa eloquently highlights the ways in which people with dementia are often denied their basic human rights.
Theresa’s words resonate deeply with DAI’s mission and reflect the lived experiences of millions of people worldwide. You can listen to Theresa’s episode and hear her story here.
As we reflect on Human Rights Day, let us remember that the rights enshrined in the UDHR belong to everyone, including those living with dementia. Our rights are not negotiable, and our future must include all voices. At DAI, we will continue to advocate for a world where people with dementia are treated with dignity, respect, and equality.
Together, let’s build a future that honors the theme of “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now.” Join us in this mission by supporting our work, amplifying the voices of people with dementia, and standing in solidarity with our community.
