Have You Considered How Much We Need You to Understand?

Co-chair of the Board of DAI, Janine left her career in 2017 and struggled with no job, income or health insurance for over a year before she was finally diagnosed with younger-onset Alzheimer’s in 2018 at the age of 53.

She now strives to advocate for herself, and others with dementia, as she continues to regain confidence in who she is and what she is still capable of accomplishing.

In the reflection shared below, ‘Have You Considered How Much We Need You to Understand,' Janine hopes to help others understand the early stages of younger-onset Alzheimer’s and communicate the devastating impact of rejection and exclusion that results from stigma and stereotypes.

Janine’s words challenge us to educate ourselves about Alzheimer’s and other dementias so we can better understand that those with younger-onset more often demonstrate atypical presentations than those with later-onset. Because, when we are educated, we are better able to stop judging people when they do not fit a stereotype we have been led to believe.

Together, we can dispel the myths and misconceptions that lead to withdrawal and isolation when people with dementia are dismissed and ignored because of the barrier of stigma.

Challenge yourself to look beyond the diagnosis, to see the person, and to act with kindness and respect instead of judgement. This segment of the ‘Have You Considered' series is not only a call to action, but also a reminder of the power of knowledge and inclusion.

By embracing these principles, we can help create a society where those with dementia not only live but thrive, their voices heard, and their contributions valued.
