Submission to the Australian Government in Relation to the New Aged Care Act 2024 Consultation

As Australia continues with reform of the age care sector, DAI have been actively involved in promoting the human rights and dignity of people living with dementia who will use government funded age care services. Recently, DAI compiled a submission in relation to the upcoming support at home program, presenting the disparity of disability specific support between people aged under 65, and those over age 65. The support at home program as presented has removed the meager dementia supplement, and the highest level support package will provide a maximum of 4 hours of support per day, 5 days per week.

This level of support falls desperately short for people living with dementia who wish to live in their community of choice.

Capping in home support means that people living with dementia who require additional support have no active choice to remain in their community, and are essentially forced into institutional arrangements. This is a frank and systemic breach of the convention of the rights of people with a disability, and must be addressed as a matter of urgency.

Further concerns with new arrangements include an additional financial contribution to age care services, which will further impede and discriminate against older people living with dementia.

DAI will continue to represent the living voice of all of us living with dementia, both in Australia and across the world, as we fight for equality and recognition.

We welcome your thoughts and opinions, and encourage you to email your thoughts, ideas and personal experiences, so that we can bring everyone’s voice to the table.
