Taking to the Streets is an initiative led by Reimagining Dementia: A Creative Coalition for Justice (Coalition), which has called on its 1,100 plus members (48 countries) and allies like OTD 2030 to host public-facing events, activities, and conversations that present a creative, collaborative and hope-filled alternative to the fear, stigma and hopelessness surrounding dementia. Since the campaign began in 2023, activities of all sizes and varieties took place across the globe, including Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, India, the UK, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, South Africa, Brazil, Nigeria, and communities across Canada and the United States.
This year the Coalition once again brings together people living with dementia, care partners, community members, activists and allies, helping professionals, artists, academics and others who believe in creativity of all kinds as an innovative way to transform the stigma and stereotypes of dementia and the inequities experienced by people living with it, and to effect individual and social transformation.
Over the last five years, the Coalition has emerged as a grassroots catalyst for change and a visible “hub” and community of support for all and will not stop until we all have access to life-affirming alternatives in every aspect of their lives.
According to Coalition coordinator Mary Fridley, “Taking It to the Streets is all about winning the hearts and minds of people globally so that together we can shatter the silence and shame that continues to define how dementia is viewed in our society. And we’re doing so with creativity and through the arts, play and more because this is how we restore humanity to people and ensure that diagnosis is a starting point for joy, connection, growth and new possibilities.”
